The Ugly Truth About Self-reflection

Standard

Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart. Psalm 51:6 AMP

How often have you allowed a few days, weeks, or months to pass before reading the Bible?

How often have you pursued your own desires and the pleasures of this world?

How often do you bring your thoughts under control by the Holy Spirit?

Does your life reflect the will of your Heavenly Father?

I am sure many of you have cringed as you read each question, but I am not here to condemn you but to encourage you to use this moment as a point of self-reflection. There are times in our lives that we have to be honest with ourselves about where we are. We must face the ugly truth and make a choice to move forward.

The Lord longs to help us in our times of need, but we must first surrender ourselves to Him. For us to live a life controlled by the Holy Spirit we must learn to control our thought lives. When our mind has been conditioned through prayer and mediation upon scripture it is not as easy for demonic attacks to succeed against us. We war with our flesh every day, but the point is not to give up. Turn your attention to the Word of God and receive the strength you need to live a spirit-filled life. I have provided a few go-to scriptures that have helped me along the way.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now Your word do I keep [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying it]. Psalm 119:67 AMP
Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15 (AMP)

That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time— remember, you’ve been raised from the dead! —into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God. Romans 6:12-14 (MSG)

Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. Philippians 2:13 (AMP)

Father, forgive us for picking up your Word only after our ways fail us. Forgive us for not remaining focused and intent on doing your will. Too often, we get caught up in our everyday routine and lose sight of your will for our lives. Forgive us for giving ourselves over to every thought, craving, and desire, for Your Word says we should not give any part of our body over to sin. Help us Lord to get ourselves back on track fully committed to you and your plans for our lives. Help us to submit to your good will and pleasure. Help us to rely on your Strength and not our own. Help us to surrender our will to yours. We know that you have our best interest at heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Grace and Peace,

Intimacy starts here..

Standard

Friends mean well, even when they hurt you. But when an enemy puts his arm around your shoulder–watch out! Proverbs 27:6 Good News Translation

27655152_1506643292767851_7021004745924881474_n

Intimacy is not purely physical. It’s the act of connecting with someone so deeply, you feel like you can see in their soul. Author Unknown

Contrary to popular opinion, intimacy is more than just sex. It requires getting to know each other deeply. It is being vulnerable with each other or as Bishop TD Jakes puts it, “in-to-me-see.” It is the time that you and your spouse choose to be transparent and honest with each other despite the fear you may feel about letting it all show. For some, it is easier to bare all in the bedroom rather than baring their soul, but to experience a deeper connection in marriage it takes having those tough conversations. It is the heart to heart conversations that may bring about tears. It often takes lovingly, hurting each other’s feelings, to ensure the relationship is saved.

In our twenty plus years of marriage my husband and I have noticed the most growth in our relationship during the times we had to have those tough conversations. Hiding the deep concerns, fears, and not attending to the issues that are festering in your relationship can destroy true intimacy. According to Dave Willis of Stronger Marriages, “Secrecy is the enemy to intimacy. Every healthy relationship is built on a foundation of honesty and trust.”

To experience true intimacy, we must first begin by being honest with ourselves, with God and with each other. My challenge to you today is to move past every hindrance that so easily besets you and your relationship. Many are plagued with heart issues from the past that have hindered you from connecting totally with God and your spouse. It’s time to deal with the pain of your past. Trust God to heal your heart and restore the damage that has been done as you approach the issue.

Daddy God, I come to you on behalf of my brothers and sisters that are experiencing difficulties in their relationships right now. I ask that You grant them the grace to deal with the tough issues they have been facing. I pray that you will surround them with the support and the encouragement that they need as they begin to have the tough conversations and move forward towards healing. Surround them with Your love. Teach them to love like You love. Minister to the pain that they have experienced over the years and help them to forgive. I pray that You will make their relationship a trophy of Your grace. In Jesus name, Amen.

Is it Time to Regroup?

Standard

If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. Proverbs 24:10

Lately, I have been focusing on persistent faith in one of my coaching groups. It is amazing how often we start our journey with God on fire! We run head first into new ventures, relationships, new career paths, etc., only to come face to face with the reality it takes to make it all work.

Persistence denotes going forward stubbornly in spite of opposition, importunity, or warning. And of course we know that faith is the substance of things hoped for. In other words, faith believes in what we cannot see. So what happens when we apply persistence to our faith? It should result in a greater fervor, a greater passion, or greater determinations to believe God and to press forward to see what He has spoken come to pass. Again, this is not always the case, when we come face to face with challenges sometimes we falter in our belief. Believing becomes difficult when everything looks to be going the opposite direction that you originally hoped. We begin to realize that it will take much more than originally planned. Does this mean it is not worth fighting for? Absolutely not!

My goal today is to help encourage those of you that have found yourselves here. You have come to a place of decision. Should you continue or should you quit? I say to you today, you have come too far to turn back now. If challenges have increased regroup and find the inner strength you need to keep moving. It’s ok to make adjustments. Just don’t quit!

There is a fighter on the inside of you. Go back to God and seek further instructions. What did He say in the beginning? Did you get all the directions before moving forward? If the path you are on has been sanctioned by Him, He knows the way that you need to take; allow Him to work in you the will to complete the process.

Grace and Peace,

It Takes Consistency

Standard

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Galatians 6:9 NLT

Most often we want change but we are not willing to do the necessary work to arrive at the change we desire to see. It has been said that consistency is the key to breakthrough. In other words, if lasting change is what you expect, it will take consistent action to get you there.

As we look at the definition of consistent we find that is marked by harmony, regularity, or steady continuity. It is free from variation or contradiction. Is this the effort you are putting forward in accomplishing your goals? If not, it is time to get to work.

For many consistency usually goes out the window whenever discouragement comes in to play. It gets tiring doing the right things over and over again just to be disappointed. This can be the case in healthy choices, relationships, or even goal setting and planning. Whatever the case, we often take for granted that seed time and harvest time will always remain. We will always reap what we sow.

Unfortunately this is true in all aspects, good and bad. I want to encourage you today to keep going if you are indeed on the right track. Often times, you are doing the right things but not doing them enough to see the results you desire.

Lord teach me to hold on even when I don’t see the results I desire to see, especially when I am walking in obedience to what You have commissioned me to do. I know that everything will not happen overnight but I often get discouraged when it takes longer than expected. Help me to no longer judge by what I see but by what You have already spoken. In Jesus’s name Amen.

CALL TO ACTION: It has been said to change a habit, a behavior pattern it takes consistent action over 21 days. What can you commit to doing consistently for the next 21 days in order to see the change you desire?

It’s Not Just About Sunday

Standard

How can I stand in a corporate setting and say, “God I love you, God I need you, you’re my everything…Oh but I haven’t even opened your Word, or spent time communing with you this week?” We cannot begin to adore (worship) a God and bring Him praise when we haven’t begun to know Him. Debra Black

IMG_20180226_071228_746

As, I read this statement it reminded me of the time when I thought reading the Bible and worshipping God was just for Sunday. Growing up Sundays were all about going to church. I didn’t understand why at the time, I just knew it was the thing to do.

Now, that I am older and know better I understand that worship is more about having an intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father. It’s not about rules and serving an angry God; it is about getting to know and love the God that created us, the God that loves us and gave His Only Son for us.   To worship God, we must make sure we are spending adequate time with Him to strengthen our relationship.  This can’t happen with just a Sunday mentality.  We must make time with Him a priority every day. Worship is a lifestyle and cultivating intimacy happens through relationship not religion. When we function under the “Sunday only mentality” it stunts the growth of our faith. It is hard for us to trust a God that we don’t know.

God desires to commune with you daily. He is standing at the door of your heart knocking. As scriptures say, today if you hear His voice harden not your heart. Invite Him in to commune with you.  Allow Him to sit with you and share the secrets of His heart. Cultivate that intimate relationship with Him that allows you to walk boldly and confidently in your faith.  He is waiting on you.

Let this cry from David become the cry of your heart today; Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things and give me life through your word. Psalms 119:34-37 NLT

Father, draw us closer to you each day. Let your Word be the food and drink we desire daily. Let your presence become our place of comfort. In Jesus name, Amen.

 Grace and Peace to you,

Mary

It will be well..

Standard

He set my feet upon a rock, steadying my footsteps and establishing my path. Psalm 40:2b AMP

2018 came in with a vengeance. On top of seeing snow in unexpected places this year, we have seen a number of tragedies, deaths, illnesses, among other life-altering challenges. It’s almost as if the bottom fell out and many of you find yourselves trying to find sure footing again. Is there a place of certainty that I can find rest? Is there hope for me, my family, and our future?

Even in this moment of transition I speak peace to the weary souls that are at a place of turmoil. I speak rest to your minds from the anxious toil. Cease striving trying to figure it all out and rest in the unfailing love of the Father; for He gives rest to His beloved.

We must learn to accept His sovereignty and receive His grace. There are situations we will never be able to understand. We are to trust that God has it all under control and He is working it all together for our good. He will also reveal His plan as time unfolds.

2nd Corinthians 12:9 encourages us to rely on the grace of God; “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul wanted God to remove the problems he faced because they seemed too much for him to bear, but God knowing all too well the purpose of those trials encouraged Him that His power was all He needed.

I challenge you today as you read this to take a step back and ask God to help you see your situation through His eyes. In times like these we need Him to broaden our perspective. As He does take comfort in the rest that He has already provided; be still my friend and know that He is God. There is nothing too hard for our God to handle. When everything around you is shaking, He is a firm foundation. He is the rock of ages. He knows how to steady you and establish your footing on solid ground.

Father, teach me to rest in your unfailing love. I admit I get lost trying to find my way through life’s ups and downs. I don’t always know where to go or what to think. I don’t always know what to do, but you do. May I take comfort in knowing that Your purposes for me will be fulfilled. There is nothing that I will encounter that can separate me from Your love. Thank you, Father. In Jesus’s name Amen.
