Like a city broken into and left without a wall, so is a person who lacks self-control. Proverbs 25:28 (GW)
Self- control is hard to regain when you let your guard down. It is so important for us to set up boundaries to help keep us focused. I have come to find that boundaries are for our own good. Boundaries are for our protection. A boundary can be, not buying junk food for the person that is working to lose weight. Someone that is single may have to set boundaries with members of the opposite sex to discourage immoral behavior. An athlete may have to set boundaries around their time to ensure they get the proper work out to maintain their stamina for the upcoming game. Whatever the case may be, boundaries help to keep us on track when the going gets tough.
When we give in to the desires of our flesh, we are like a city without walls, anything goes. Self-control must be maintained to see the fruits of our labor. Whenever we move past the boundaries we set it is much harder to regain control. We relinquish our authority, much like Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden. The moment they bit into that fruit, Satan gained access to what the Lord had given them. This is not the pattern we want to follow. Paul says it best in 1 Corinthians 9:27 (ERV) It is my own body I fight to make it do what I want. I do this so that I won’t miss getting the prize myself after telling others about it.
I besiege you my dear brothers and sisters, to stay on track. Finish the course that you have been destined to complete. No, the journey may not be easy, but the end results, the rewards, will be satisfying. Fight the good fight of faith in the power and might that has already been provided by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Victory belongs to you.
Lord, so often we let our guards down, thinking that we have time to get it all together, not understanding that we are giving the enemy a foothold in our lives. Help us to move past discouragement and fear into our place of breakthrough and peace. Teach us to tap into your strength in our times of weakness. In Jesus name Amen
