You saw no form on the day God spoke to you at Horeb from out of the fire. Remember that. Carefully guard yourselves so that you don’t turn corrupt and make a form, carving a figure that looks male or female, or looks like a prowling animal or a flying bird or a slithering snake or a fish in a stream. Deuteronomy 4:15-16 (MSG)
Many of us have never seen true examples of a disciplined life. We have instead created what we perceived to be right in our own eyes. Just as Moses commanded the children of Israel to beware of forming an image of God for themselves, we too must be careful of forming our own definition for a disciplined life.
Our definition of a disciplined life will often be derived from what we have been taught and what we have seen. It will be contaminated and shaped by other people’s opinions. We must beware that we do not worship methods. We must learn to seek the Lord diligently for the direction we should take. Remember He created us. He called us. He left us viable solutions in the Bible concerning every area of our lives. His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways.
We must go back and wipe our slate clean and allow God to minister to us about what is right for us and what discipline should look like in our own lives. I have concluded that what works for everyone else will not necessarily work for me. It only leads to frustration and failure. We must recognize that we are all different. Even though God may minister the same Word to all of us, we all receive it differently. It is based on how we are wired, gifted, or our personal life experiences. It is also carried out differently in order that we each accomplish what we have been called to do. Arriving at the place of a disciplined life will require that we renew our minds in the Word of God.
If you have struggled in this area, you can begin again today. Don’t worship methods. Don’t pattern your life after others. Instead, be the original that God has created you to be. Make sure you are living up to His design for your lives.
Father, you have taught us that we should not have any other gods before you. We have failed in that area time and time again. Open our eyes to the idols that we have created in our own lives. Many of us have worshipped a way of life, methods to accomplishing our goals, money, relationships, food, sex, and the list goes on and on. Teach us, I pray how to recognize when we have strayed from worshipping You solely. Teach us I pray how to recognize your direction in our lives. Teach us how to live according to the divine plan and purpose that you have given us. We refocus our attention to You today Lord. Guide us with your eyes upon us I pray. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
